ST. FRANCIS - Alton Oakes, 73, died peacefully at his residence surrounded by his family on March 25, 2012. Alton was born in St. John on June 27, 1938 the son of Earl and Hazel (Plourde) Oakes. Alton served in the U.S. Army. His passion was trout fishing and duckpin bowling on a team with his brothers, which he did five days a week. One of his pastimes was repairing bowling balls. He retired from Glad Manufacturing in Amherst, Va. in 2000. He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Betty (Fongemie) Oakes of St. Francis; eight brothers, Elray of Fort Kent, Olivio of Vernon, Conn., Louis of Windsor, Conn., Ronaldo of St. John, Allen of Topsham, Denis of Madison Heights, Va., Ronnie of Bristol, Conn., and Elmer of Bristol, Conn.; six sisters, Marie St. Pierre of Connecticut, Betty St. Pierre of Millinocket, Anita DuLac of Hartford, Conn., Noella Milligan of Bradley, Diane Sirois of Bristol, Conn., and Debra Lagasse of East Millinocket, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and brothers- and sisters-in-law. In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by one brother, Linley and one sister, Carol Plourde. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday March 29 and 8 to 9:30 a.m. Friday March 30 at the Daigle Funeral Home, Fort Kent. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated with full military honors at 10 a.m. Friday, March 30 at the St. Charles Catholic Church, St. Francis. Spring burial will be held in Oakes Cemetery, St. John. Those who wish in Alton’s memory may make donations to the Edgar J. (Guy) Paradis Cancer Fund, 194 E.
