SINCLAIR / MADAWASKA – The cause of death has been determined for a young Madawaska man who died last summer after his vehicle went into Long Lake in Sinclair.

Gilberto Rentas, 27, died from drowning, however the manner of his death remains “undetermined,” according to the office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta.

The Aroostook County Sheriff's office has attributed the cause of the July 2011 accident to speed.

Rentas, originally of Connecticut and working in Madawaska, was driving south on Route 162 when his Nissan Xterra left the road, sped through the parking lot of the Long Lake Sporting Club, collided with a boat docking area, and became submerged in the lake. Despite the efforts of civilians at the site and responding EMS personnel, he was pronounced deceased at the scene. He left behind a son, his mother, and three sisters.

Sgt. Forrest Dudley of the Sheriff’s office was the primary investigator.
