ONLINE FIRST, IN PRINT NEXT: FORT KENT - Construction work has begun on the U.S. Route 1 side at the international bridge in Fort Kent and Clair, N.B. as seen in this photo taken Wednesday morning, May 16. The new 25-foot wider, more structurally sound arched model bridge is scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2014. The project will not use stimulus funds, but will be funded by federal and state bridge repair funding allotment that will constitute Fort Kent’s half of the approximate $11 million needed for the project, with the municipality of Clair, N.B. paying the other half. Construction is also underway in Van Buren for a $31 million rebuild of the port-of-entry structure damaged in the 2008 flood, and Madawaska is scheduled for a new $50 million port-of-entry station to be completed by 2014. - SJVT photo / Manzer Belanger
